FRANCE, Morzine with kidsWhile hiking in the French Alps, you soak up the crisp mountain air, feel dwarfed by the towering pines, and enjoy the sounds of a babbling brook beside you. Up ahead, you find an old stone bridge lined with delicate flowers, and just beyond you see the storybook village of Morzine, nestled in the valley of a river gorge and flanked by grand mountains speckled with wooden chalets. Each chalet has steep, pitched roofs and charming balconies overflowing with brightly colored flowers.

At first encounter, it seems to be a sleepy mountain village, but as you continue it is clear there is far more than meets the eye. Every aspect of the winter resort is transformed into summer fun, from ski runs becoming hiking and biking trails, to the chairlifts taking you up each mountain for spectacular views. Located just a few miles from the Swiss border and about a 1-hour drive from Geneva, it is easily accessible even for the international traveler. If your family is looking for an active, outdoor vacation in France, here 4 great things to do, 1 great place to stay, and 1 great place to eat while visiting Morzine with kids.

Activity 1: Ride the slopes of Pleney

Don’t miss your chance to ride the luge on your visit to Morzine with kids!

It’s time to ride the luge on the Pleney! Grab a sled, enjoy a short ride up on a chairlift and take in the breathtaking views of the valley while you scope out the luge route below. Once at the top it is time to hop on your sled in the luge track, with a few instructions and safety checks you are on your way. Zipping down and around the mountain, with each turn presenting a majestic view of the beautiful natural surroundings.

You have the fresh cool air brushing your face, and your smile couldn’t get any wider as you let out giggles of joy. This is a great activity for the entire family, as the adults can take the small kids with them and the bigger kids can enjoy it on their own.

There are two tracks, with one designed to be slower for the smaller kids or anyone who would prefer a more relaxed pace. The sleds are equipped with hand brakes, so you always have full control of your speed. It is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and a memory that will certainly stick with the kids. They are open from July 4th until August 30th, 10:30am – 6:00pm, for ages 5 and up. Lac de Montriond (Lake Montriond), Morzine, France.

Lac de Montriond (Lake Montriond) is a beautiful outdoor playground, with fresh water swimming, hiking trails, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and more. It is a natural lake, said to be created after a landslide from Nantaux mountain to the northwest hundreds of years ago.

The entire area has a sense of peace and calm. A nice stroll or ride around the lake on the flat trail is suitable for all ages. There are a few restaurants and places to stop along the way, and if you have time, be sure to view the waterfalls (50 min walk from the parking lot). The kids can safely run around here. Or you might find a good spot to lay down on a blanket and watch the clouds drift by.

It’s the perfect place to have a picnic or bring some wine to watch the sun and mountain reflections dance on the lake’s emerald green surface. Don’t forget to take that perfect postcard picture of the family. Find out more: https://en.valleedaulps.com/montriond-lake-1.html#media

Pssst! Don’t miss the map of our Morzine with kids recommendations at the end of this feature.

If you have a more adventurous spirit, you must try the ultimate zipline instead, the Fantasitcable. You will soar 800 feet above the French Alps and create a feeling and memory which will last a lifetime. This is not for the faint of heart and you must weigh at least 77 lbs. SCOTLAND, EDINBURGH WITH KIDS – Edinburgh’s Old Town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and hidden courtyards, all filled with history. Perched high atop a rocky crag, in the heart of the well-preserved Old Town, is the Royal Mile. It boasts the Edinburgh Castle, the magnificent St. Giles’ Cathedral topped with a 15th century crown steeple, and many more stunning buildings with Medieval, Gothic, and Victorian charm.

Cockburn Street descends from the Royal Mile, slicing through the pattern of alleys, to give a gentler gradient and wider passage as it snakes its way down to the New Town of Princes Street Gardens, High Street shops, and Waverly Station. Here you’ll find restaurants beckoning with delicious aromas, lambswool Scottish tartans tempting you to touch, stunning buildings and bustling streets that can inspire days of exploration.

If your family is heading to Scotland, it may be hard to know where to begin. So here are 4 great activities to start with, along with 1 great place to stay, and 1 great place to eat while visiting Edinburgh with kids.

Edinburgh with Kids

Activity 1: Descend Beneath The City

Go below the bustling streets for a glimpse of Edinburgh's past.

Go below the bustling streets for a glimpse of Edinburgh’s past.

Enjoy meandering the old streets of Edinburgh on a family-friendly ghost tour. A cloaked tour guide will take you along the narrow alley and fill your minds with images of the past. Learn all about “the nasties” and why all of the streets have access points which flow to the river. Have the kids take part in some of the stories, so they can get a feel for old Edingburgh. Once you’ve spent a bit of time above ground, it is time to descend beneath the city.

Walk down stone steps into the amazing candlelit underground world, which was once bustling with shops, traders, and activity (some legal, others not so much). These are dark streets untouched by daylight, filled with a strange silence, their damp stone walls carrying only the faintest echo of the crowds on the high street you’ve left behind. Now these old shops, haunted vaults, and secret passages are empty, but you can get a feel for what it was like long ago, from the few rooms staged to depict the past.

Hear stories and tales of old shop keepers and how people lived in the underground world. Some of the stories set the stage, which allow your mind to conjure up a few spooky moments, but it is all family friendly. The kids over 5 will love it! Website: https://www.mercattours.com/tours/ghost-tours/view-tour/ghostly-underground

Activity 2: Startle Your Senses at Camera Obscura

Six floors of mind-bending fun await at Edinburgh's Camera Obscura.

Six floors of mind-bending fun await at Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura & World of Illusions.

The Camera Obscura itself is like a 19th-century webcam, projecting live images of Edinburgh through a pinhole camera in the roof on to a viewing table, but it is even more fun when you can hold buildings or people in your hands! Six floors of amazement and optical illusions, all mixed with an interactive science museum, is guaranteed fun for everyone. Lose yourself in the mirror maze; get shrunk by giant children in the big-small room; see what you will look like at an older age; and stagger through the vortex tunnel. You will also see some of the most spectacular views of Edinburgh, from the rooftop terrace.

They open at 10am and it is best to be there ready and waiting, as it can get very crowded. You could easily spend a few hours here and there isn’t an onsite café, so come prepared with snacks for the little ones. Website: https://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/

Activity 3: Walk The Royal Mile

The Royal Mile, Edinburgh.

The Royal Mile, Edinburgh.

The Royal Mile is the name given to a succession of streets forming the main thoroughfare of Edinburgh’s Old Town. It runs about 1.2 miles from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. There, it rests in the shadows of Arthur’s Seat. Walking along the cobblestone streets, you will pass old and new residential brick buildings, with narrow closes and stairways leading to the secret underground world. There will be plenty of plaques to read, closes to wander, and little hidden gardens.

At street level, you will be able to visit several interesting sights for all ages. Watch for the free Museum of Childhood (with toys from the past) and Gladstones Land among others. Perhaps there will even be a proclamation announced from Mercat Cross while you are there. The streets are vibrant and alive with plenty of shops to taste whisky or buy tartan knitwear, but it is also great to stop and watch buskers performing their talents, perhaps with a bagpipe. Website: https://www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/royal-mile-and-grassmarket-p918401

Activity 4: Step Into The Past at Edinburgh Castle

Morning at Edinburgh Castle.

Morning at Edinburgh Castle.

A visit to Edinburgh just wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Edinburgh Castle, which dominates the city. High up on a volcanic rock formed millions of years, it’s perched perfectly at the top end of the Royal Mile.

Explore 1,000 years of history on your visit to this castle in excellent condition. It’s an ideal setting and size for the kids to enjoy without getting overwhelmed. If you are in or near the castle at 1:00 pm, you will hear them set off a cannon.

When roaming the cobblestone streets within the castle grounds, you will have stunning 360-degree views of the city, but you will also be able to get a feel for how it was used hundreds of years ago. You may enter many of the buildings to view the crown jewels, museums, and even the prison. It’s great fun to let your imagination run wild and pretend you are in the past. Website: https://www.edinburghcastle.gov.uk/

Tip: Remember to order your tickets in advance online so you can avoid standing in the ticket line for 30 to 60 minutes.

1 Great Place to Eat in Edinburgh with Kids: Kyloe Restaurant & Grill

Kyloe Restaurant & Grill, Edinburgh.

Kyloe Restaurant & Grill, Edinburgh.

Chances are, if you’re spending some time in Edinburgh with kids, you’ll find yourself walking along Princes Street, and there you’ll find Kyloe Restaurant & Grill. Scotland is world-renowned for its beef and here steak is the specialty.

In for the educational experience? Have the waiter bring out a board to show the various cuts of beef. Learn a little about each cut, how long they were aged, and the best degree of “doneness” for each one.

If steak isn’t everyone’s favorite, they have other options on the menu, including incredible side dishes made to perfection. We highly recommend the broccoli and portabella mushrooms. But more importantly, don’t forget to save room for dessert.

If you are a chocolate lover, the Kyloe Knickerbocker Glory is for you. It is a stunning combination of a large chewy brownie, thick hot fudge, and a sprinkling of fresh blackberries with pomegranates all topped with vanilla ice cream. Wow!

What’s more, kids will enjoy the fun cow motif, with cowhide covered furniture and the surrounding Neo-classical artwork. The adults may find a bit of humor in the cow compositions from masters such as Moonet and Vincent van Bovine, to name a few. Website: https://www.kyloerestaurant.com/

Tip: Ask for the corner widow table for spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle.

SPAIN, Valencia with Kids – As your family navigates the narrow pedestrian streets of Valencia’s city center, you’ll find yourself surrounded by Spanish architecture, terra cotta walls, Juliette-style balconies, and hanging potted plants.

As you approach Lope de Vega Square, be on the look out for the narrowest building in Europe, at only 105 cm wide (located at #6). Let the kids to try and spot the mini cat house in the neighborhood of El Carmen. And as you make way to Plaza Mayor, listen for the sounds of the Spanish chatter from the outdoor cafes, a street performer’s Spanish guitar, or the rhythmic clapping of a Flamenco dancer enticing you to stay a while.

Here in Valencia, you can also visit beautiful sandy beaches like Las Areans, and stroll along the Paseo Maritimo where you will hear the waves lapping and smell the fresh fish cooking at the beach barbacoas–a treat for virtually all visitors.

But for those visiting Valencia with kids, we’d also recommend these 4 great activities plus 1 great place to stay and 1 great place to eat while you are there. (Map and pinnable included at end to help with your trip planning.)

The 411 on Valencia with Kids

Once the run down of the day is discussed, it is off to the kitchen for a load of fun and magic. You will learn how to make traditional Valencia Paella and the staff is sure to make it fun for everyone, and yes the kids will love it. There is plenty of singing, dancing, chanting and making fun noises as you learn to cook.

Once it is all done, you are invited to sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labor and eat the paella and other side dishes. You can read more about our Valencia cooking class in this post. Website: https://escueladearrocesypaellas.com/

Gulliver Park is fun and exciting for children who can climb & slide on a massive play structure of the character Gulliver, the famous literary character from Gulliver’s Travels. The kids will be able to climb up the rope ties or the stairs along his legs. Of course they will squeal with joy as they slide down his belt buckle or his hair.

This is a magical adventure for kids and adults, is located at the heart of the Turia Gardens. Be sure to bring along a picnic, as there are tables available near the head of the structure. If you have younger kids, you might want to plan to spend a full day or visit over multiple days here. Website: https://www.visitvalencia.com/jardines-turia

Activity 3: Play at the City of Arts and Sciences

Valencia's City of Arts and Sciences

Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences

The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia is a modern entertainment and learning center you simply must visit if staying in Valencia with kids. It is an entire complex devoted to scientific and cultural activities, which is made up of six major elements:

 1. The Hemisfèric (IMAX cinema), the Umbracle (landscaped park area and parking structure),

 3. The Oceanogràfic (the largest aquarium in Europe with over 500 marine species),
 4. Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (Opera house),
 5. and the Agora (conference center).

For the kids the aquarium and the science center are likely the most popular attractions!

If you are on a budget and don’t want to pay entrance fees, there is so much to do and see for free within the complex. On the upper deck of the Umbracle you will find some nice gardens and a path, but also important is a little bit of shade. This is a great area to just relax and enjoy the views below of the complex.

At the end of the complex, near the Science Museum, you will find a variety of clocks and sundials, which are fascinating. The kids will love trying to guess the time and play with shadows a bit. Website: https://www.cac.es/es/home.html

Tip: Don’t forget to take photos! It is almost guaranteed you will find the perfect photo opportunity from just many vantage points around the complex. With the unique architecture of each of the buildings, combined with the beautiful blue and reflections from the pools, you can’t go wrong. Did you know that the Hemisfèric building looks like an eye, when reflecting on the pool? Of course the water needs to be still to see the full effect.

There are so many great foods, drinks, meats and more. Don’t forget to try the orxata or horchata de chufa, a sweet cool beverage made from tigernuts, water and sugar. Website: https://www.mercadocentralvalencia.es/El-Mercado.aspx#

]]>
MALAYSIA, Langkawi with Kids – Langkawi is an archipelago of ninety-nine islands and is home to Malaysia’s first designated ‘geopark.’ These rock islands date to more than 550 million years, and almost all of them have a mushroom-capped top of wild jungle growing on them. When you are out on the water and can view these majestic islands up close, you get a feel for how amazing this world really is.

There are many tours offered where you can get up close and personal with these beauties and even explore their jungles and caves–all worth doing. There is also no shortage of gorgeous, white sand beaches to explore throughout the archipelago. And best of all, these natural surroundings aren’t overrun with resorts and tourists. But if you want to see Langkawi, go now–before everyone knows about it.

Malaysia with kids, the 411 on Langkawi

Here are my top 4 recommendations of what to do when you get there, plus 1 great place to eat and 1 great place we recommend staying on your family vacation in Langkawi.

Activity 1: Soar to the Top of the Island on the Langkawi Skycab

Langkawi Skycab with kids

A ride on the Langkawi Skycab is a must when visiting Langkawi, Malaysia, with kids.

The Langkawi Skycab is the longest free span for a single rope cable car, which is about 950 meters long, and it has 2 viewing areas. The highest is at 650 meters above sea level. Be prepared for some incredible views.

To get to the top, you’ll actually take two cable cars. The trip up to the top takes approximately 25 minutes. Once you’re at the top, the views are gorgeous. Hopefully it will be a clear day for you so that you can see the surrounding areas and get some good videos/pictures.

From the second viewing area, you may also walk along a trail out to the Sky Bridge, which connects the tops of two of the mountains. It takes approximately 20 minutes to venture out to the bridge, but you are in for a treat. It is amazing how the bridge was engineered, and they have several Plexiglas panels where you can stand and see the trees/land far below. It’s kind of spooky, but the bridge also provides great views.

Activity 2: Float through the Kilim Geoforest Park

Kilim Geoforest Park

Soaring eagles and secluded bat caves await in Kilim Geoforest Park.

Kilim Geoforest Park makes for an excellent day tour for adults and kids alike, which will allow you to see beautiful animals and scenery. If you’ve never seen mangrove forests, you’re in for a treat as they grow in spooky formations, and actually help protect against erosion. You will meander the Kilim Geoforest Park in a small boat and have a few places to stop off and stretch your legs as well.

You’ll see monkeys, crabs, and all manner of other critters along the way. The stop at the bat caves is pretty spectacular (not to fear the dark!) as you walk through one end and out the other. You need to be very quiet as you walk through, but when you look up with your flashlight, you will discover you aren’t the only ones in the cave. The bats are pretty amazing, and there are some nice stalactites and stalagmites that are formed within the limestone caves.

You will also see many floating restaurants throughout the day, and it is worth a stop over to have a drink. You may even request to stop at the “Hole in the Wall” floating restaurant, where they have a fish feeding session for you to watch.

Tip: Request to see the Eagle feeding. Your boat will stop along the waterway and give you a moment to enjoy the peace around you. There will likely be eagles soaring above and there are also set times when they feed the eagles. You want to be sure you are part of that experience, so request in advance so they can time it accordingly. This will provide ample opportunity for animal photographers to grab that perfect pic.

Activity 3: Swim Above The Colorful Sea Life with Langkawi Coral Island

Palau Payar Marine park

Ferry out to the Palau Payar Marine park for an unforgettable day trip in Langkawi with kids.

Enjoy a great snorkeling experience with Langkawi Coral Island. Spend the day out at the Pulau Payar (Payar Island) Marine Park and the day is yours to explore. Not to worry, everything is arranged for you. Just make your way to the pier and the rest of the day you will be guided. It’s about a 1-hour ferry ride out to the island and you will have about 4 hours to snorkel and eat the box lunches provided. If you are a scuba diver, you can upgrade to have 1 or 2 dives.

When snorkeling, watch closely for interesting sea creatures and you won’t be disappointed. With a focused eye, you will see several nudibranchs, grouper, black tip reef sharks, angel fish, parrot fish, puffer fish, and all kinds of coral. The kids will be amazed to see all of the life under the water here.

If you would prefer not to see what is in the water, it is okay to just hang out at the beach and swim. After lunch, the crew gathers the left over scraps and they are thrown off the end of the pier. This is shark and fish feeding time! An amazing experience to watch with the kids!

Activity 4: Sail Away On a Sunset Dinner Cruise

Langkawi dinner cruise

Enjoy a 2-hour tour with sunset and dinner included–and be sure to bring the camera!

A sunset dinner cruise is great for a very peaceful and relaxing evening out. This is about a 2-hour tour of the surrounding islands. You will learn quite a bit about some local culture and the myths of the pregnant maiden. One of the islands appears to be the shape of a pregnant woman lying on her back. On this island there is a lake believed by some to help with fertility if you swim or drink the waters. The dinner is usually a boxed type meal, so nothing too fancy for the kids.

Of course the name gives it all away; you are also in for a spectacular sunset too. The boat will stop out at the tip of the bay and allow you time to soak in all of the colors Mother Nature has in store for you. There is no doubt you will be in for a nice view. Take notice of the eagles flying above and around you as well. We would recommend booking with Naam Adventure.

Tip: Parents, this is the perfect opportunity to sneak in a little romance! The older kids are safe to explore the boat and feel the wind at the bow. Waste no time heading to the back to enjoy a little wine and the gorgeous scenery.

Eat in your own private palapa above the rice paddies at Seashells.

SPAIN, Cordoba with Kids – Córdoba isn’t always the first place people think of when visiting Spain, but I can assure you that experiencing Córdoba with kids will be fun. It is full of history right at your fingertips and below your feet. This city has an amazing past with various religions, which all still meld together nicely. You will see remnants from Arabic, Jewish and Catholic, with a mix of Roman ruins in there as well.

Most don’t know it, but in 1000 A.D., Córdoba was the biggest city in Europe! Between 500,000 and 1 million people lived there, and it was the capital of the Moors. At the time, it was a sophisticated city with advanced learning, famous doctors, and a relatively educated population.

While its population is now approximately 330,000, it’s lost none of its allure as a fantastic place to visit. So if you are visiting, Seville, Malaga, or Granada, do make the effort to take a day trip to Córdoba.

Activity 1: Become Mesmerized at the Mezquita / Cordoba Cathedral

Mezquita Cathedral or "Mosque–Cathedral" of Córdoba, Spain

Inside the Mezquita Cathedral or “Mosque–Cathedral” of Córdoba, Spain.

The absolute must-see place in Córdoba is the Mezquita Cathedral (The Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba). In its day, it was the most important mosque of the western Islamic world. The mosque was built on top of a Visigothic church, and started in 785 A.D. It took about two hundred years to finish the mosque, and when it was completed, it was the second biggest mosque in the world. Once the Spanish reconquered Córdoba in 1236, the mosque was “converted” to a cathedral. So you will see a nice mix of both, as you walk through. Click here for Visitor Information.

TIP: The Mezquita is free from the hours of 8:30 – 9:30 (except on Sundays/Holidays). After that it’s 8 Euros for adults and 4 Euros for children. It’s a great way to start your day trip, and it’s neat to watch them open the large doors first thing.

Activity 2: Walk the Roman Bridge (Puente Romano)

Roman Bridge Cordoba

The Roman Bridge and water wheel on the Guadalquivir River at Cordoba, Spain.

As you can imagine, the Roman Bridge was built by the Romans during the reign of Augustus and crosses the over the Guadalquivir River. Along its banks you can see the Albolafia Water Mill. The wheel is no longer operational, but it must have been a great site to see when it was running.

On the far side of the bridge, you’ll see the Calahorra Tower [Torre de la Calahorra]. Inside is a museum which collects, preserves, and exhibits artifacts and documents of multicultural Córdoba. The bridge is currently for pedestrians only, but you’ll see kids running around or on bikes, as well as joggers crossing at all hours of the day. It also provides beautiful views of the city when you are on the far side of the bridge.

Activity 3: Let the Kids Run at Corredera Square (Plaza de la Corredera)

Corredera Square (Plaza de la Corredera)

Corredera Square (Plaza de la Corredera) is a great place to grab a quick bite when visiting Cordoba with kids.

No trip to a Spanish town would be complete without a visit to a local square or plaza. The Corredera Square is massive, and contains some nice restaurants and coffee shops. Besides the people watching, you’ll find the local municipal market, Sánchez Peña Market. Here you will feel the buzz of local life and happen upon some pretty interesting food items. The square is a great place to grab a bite to eat, have a drink, soak up some Spanish sun, and let the kids run around.

Activity 4: Meander the Historic Cobbled Streets

Calle de las Flores

Calle de las Flores in Cordoba’s Old Town.

No matter what schedule activities you decided to do, make sure you take the time to just meander the pedestrian streets of old town of Córdoba and allow yourself to “get lost”. You never know what you’ll happen upon, perhaps the street of flowers (Calle de las Flores). It is so much fun to just make a turn down a little road, just because it looks interesting. The kids absolutely love to discover what may be around the next turn.

The town is small enough, so you will end up on a main road soon enough and figure out where you are. It is also fun to roam around the Jewish quarters as well. You can walk through the Almodovar Gate, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like the rest of Old Town, it is filled with narrow streets, many different types of shops, and be on the lookout for the frequent ornate patios. On Calle Judios, you will find the only conserved synagogue in Andalusia.

1 Great Place to Stay: Apartamentos Alberca

If you want a little extra space and great service, you may like a stay with Apartamentos Alberca. It is centrally located and you are treated as if you are part of the family. Many of the suites are more like small apartments, in a Moorish Riad style family home. Click here for a more detailed review of the property.

1 Great Place to Eat: Join the Locals For A Meal at Taberna Luque

This is a very simple, clean and cozy place to eat in the center of town. There is nothing fancy about it, but you will love the traditional food. It is traditional There are only about 20 seats, so plan your timing wisely. THAILAND, Chiang Mai with Kids – If you’re planning a trip to Thailand with kids, your first stop may be the many beaches and islands to the south of Bangkok. Many families don’t think of Northern Thailand, as it was once known for the backpackers and singles crowd. Well, I can assure you it is very family friendly, especially in and around Chiang Mai.

This slower paced city is surrounded by nature and plenty of educational opportunities for the kids. If you have the opportunity to visit Chiang Mai with kids, here are our top 4 recommended family friendly activities, accommodation with nature activities for the kids and our favorite place for you to eat while you are there.

Chiang Mai with kids, Thailand family travel guide

Activity 1: Experience Elephant Nature Park

Elephant Nature Park

You can feed and even bathe with the elephants while visiting Chiang Mai with kids.

There are few words to describe how magical, educational, and special this place is. If you don’t do anything else in Chiang Mai, you really need to visit Elephant Nature Park. This is a full-day adventure and you will experience over 39 rescued elephants. Your hearts will be touched forever.

The day begins with pick up at your accommodation in Chiang Mai in a mini bus. You will venture about 75 minutes to the northeast of the city into the lush green mountains. Along the way, you may pass some elephant camps providing rides for tourists, but that isn’t what Elephant Nature Park is about. Here they rescue elephants from poor living conditions, being overworked or being mistreated. Your day will be spent leaning how to care for elephants and then actually taking part.

You will feed each herd and experience the excitement of letting them take that fruit right from your hands with their trunk. You will then feed another herd of elephants and even bathe them in the river. They really enjoy eating and being bathed, so prepare to splash that water around and have a good time.

During your time, you will also learn about the history of the founder and the elephant trade in northern Thailand. After feeding the elephants all morning, your tummy may be rumbling. Not to worry as a full vegetarian buffet lunch is also included in your day.

Activity 2: Tantalize Your Senses at the Saturday Night Market & Silver Temple

visit Chiang Mai's night market with a dusk view of the Silver Temple (Wat Sri Suphan).

Start your visit to Chiang Mai’s night market with a dusk view of the Silver Temple (Wat Sri Suphan).

As with most cities and towns in Thailand, you should experience the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Mai. Of course the market itself is free, but I would have some cash handy and be prepared to negotiate for your goods. If you want to try some new foods, this is the place to give it a go. You will find many things to eat here that will stretch your comfort zone, but you will also find some comfort foods, even mini ice cream cones.

The Market starts on Bumruung Buri Road, near the south gate (Chiang Mai Gate) of the old city, and runs along Wua Lai Road. They begin setting up about 4:30 or 5:00 pm and it will be buzzing until at least 10:00 pm. I would recommend arriving just before dusk, so you can also see the colors of the beautifully lit silver temple (Wat Sri Suphan), which is located at the far southwest end of the market.

Activity 3: Quench Your Curiosity with a Monk Chat

Monks in Chiang Mai with visiting family

Ask away! Monks stand ready for your questions in Chiang Mai.

During your visit to Chiang Mai with kids, you will notice men in the orange-colored robes all around town. This will no doubt peak the curiosity of your kids. Not to worry as many of the temples around offer a free Monk Chat for you. A monk chat can last 5 minutes or a couple of hours. It is a time when the monks are available for anyone to ask them anything. The chat we attended was very informal and we could ask whatever we liked.

Don’t feel like you are asking too many questions, as you will find the Monks are also very curious about you. The Monks participating are usually part of the university program and are attending these chats to improve their English and learn about others. So don’t be surprised if they ask you about your life as well.

Monk Chat at Wat Suan Dok

 • Free – Monday, Wednesday, Friday 5-7pm
 • MCU Buddhist University Chiang Mai Campus, Suthep Road (opposite Chiang Mai Neurological Hospital)
 • Tel: 053-278-967, ext. 210; 084-609-1357

Activity 4: Take an Interactive Scorpion Tailed River Cruise

Scorpion Tailed River Cruise boat in Chiang Mai, Thailand

You can float in many a boat in Chiang Mai, but the Scorpion Tailed River Cruise provides a boatload of information as you travel.

If you are looking for a standard float along the river in a boat, you can select a day cruise from just about any tour agency in town. If you are looking for something a little more memorable and educational, then the Scorpion Tailed River Cruise is the one for you.

Not only will you enjoy your tour along the Ping River, with an English-speaking guide, you will also experience the extra bonus of having a stop over at the owner’s property along the river. Here he will serve you mango sticky rice and juice, but that’s not all. You will also get a private tour and history lesson in his garden. You will learn about the indigenous plants of Northern Thailand and their common uses, such as citronella. This really is a great afternoon activity and the kids will be mesmerized.

How to book with Scorpion Tailed River Cruise:

1 Great Place to Stay in Chiang Mai: Chai Lai Orchid

Chai Lai Orchid eco resort

One hour from the city feels like a world away when you stay at the Chai Lai Orchid eco resort.

Nestled in the lush jungle, just 50 meters across a suspended bridge from the road, you will find an oasis like no other. Only one hour out of Chiang Mai, you will find the affordable family friendly Eco Resort, Chia Lai Orchid. But this is far more than just a resort, it is a place to enjoy nature. The river babbles below your tree house like rooms and the elephant trek route runs right through the resort.

You can spend your day playing in the river by tubing, kayaking or taking a ride on the bamboo raft. Both the staff and the accommodation are lovely. There is one restaurant on site and all of the food is enjoyable, but we especially loved the cashew chicken and the Asian salad. This is a nice break from the city and transportation is easily arranged through the hotel.

1 Great Place to Eat in Chiang Mai: Blessed Food

Blessed Food restaurant

Simple, straightforward meals abound at Blessed Food restaurant in Chiang Mai.

Blessed Food is a very simple, clean and low cost place to eat in Chiang Mai. There is nothing fancy about it, but you will love the food. It is traditional Thai food at street food prices. There are only 8 tables in the family-friendly restaurant, but they are almost always full. Blessed Food is located off of Nimman Road, about one block down on Soi 6. Try the cashew chicken; it is absolutely wonderful.
